At the moment we are only teaching Typography workshops as part of the Conceptontwikkeling course by Art & the CIty.
WHAT IS EXPERIMENTAL TYPOGRAPHY?
Welcome to the world of experimental typography: letters on the crossroad of art and function!
Typography is the design of letters and text. Typography is often mostly functional but letters can also be very visual and artful, especially when letter shapes become imagery.
Letters can be transformed into isolated works of art or they can be incorporated into a design project. Think logos, posters or video!
Hallelujah for the digital tools that make it possible to achieve amazing typographical designs without getting our hands dirty. However, nothing beats the unique look of handmade!
Experimental Typography is for everyone who loves making things by hand and is ready to step away from the computer for a day!
No special knowledge or talent is needed.

PROGRAM // EXPERIMENTAL TYPOGRAPHY
During this Creative Lab day you will use your hands to create letters or words in 2 or 3 dimensions using any material you fancy: paper, ink, trash, food, wire, fibre. At the end of this page you will find many examples of the kinds of things you can create.
We start the day with coffee and an informal presentation with background information, tons of examples, inspiring artists and more.
Next there will be a workshop featuring creative warm-up exercises, possible techniques and a tour of the available tools and materials.
The remainder of the morning you can work on your idea or concept. We are at the ready to assist you whenever you want. You can work with a specific goal in mind or decide to work intuitively to see what comes to the surface.
Lunch
After lunch the entire afternoon is yours to have fun with your idea(s) and the materials and tools available in the art studio. Busy hands, quiet mind! We are available all afternoon to be your creative guide, help you get started with materials or give feedback.
Happy hour! After a drink and a snack we’ll send you relaxed and refreshed into the weekend.
RESULT
You will leave the studio with handmade letters / words / characters / titles.
Maybe your work is a beginning study of a technique or subject or perhaps it is ready to be enjoyed as is.
Or, you can incorporate your handmade work into a digital project: think handmade letters on a book cover, on a poster or in a video.
And, most likely, you will go home with boosted creative confidence!

ABOUT US
Cobo&Co founder Heidi Smets has been working as a graphic designer for almost 20 years. During her studies and career she has focused on book design and typography.
During the Creative Labs Heidi will tell you all about experimental typography and help you along the way towards your own unique work!
